South Hobart lies below kunanyi / Mount Wellington, measured at 58 to 102 m above sea level. Where a block is cut into the hillside, the house sits against the cut, and that puts ground against one wall. Add a rivulet catchment running through the suburb and lateral damp is easy to mistake for rising damp here. Sun matters too. We have not measured winter sun for any street, so look at the damp wall itself. A south-facing wall gets the least winter sun, and less sun means less drying, and a wall that never dries never recovers between wet spells.

South Hobart is 1.9 km from the estuary shore. At that distance, salt in the plaster is more likely to have come up from the ground with the water than in on the wind. The Hobart Rivulet runs through the suburb, and Hobart Rivulet Park is one of its named parks. For a house near the rivulet, check the ground water after rain, not only on a dry day.
