About

About Rising Damp Hobart

A referral service for owners of old masonry houses in southern Tasmania.

Rising Damp Hobart exists because the hardest part of a damp problem is not the repair, it is finding out what you actually have. We arrange an on-site assessment with a damp specialist, you get a written diagnosis, and if you decide to proceed the work goes to a trade suited to that method and that building.

What we are, plainly

Rising Damp Hobart is a lead referral service. We connect Hobart homeowners with damp specialists and licensed trades in southern Tasmania. We do not carry out the work ourselves. We are not licensed builders, damp specialists or stonemasons, we do not hold the warranty on any work, and we are not the cheapest route to a quote — you could ring three companies yourself. What we do is make sure the first person who looks at your wall is diagnosing it rather than selling one product.

Why old Hobart housing needs its own conversation

Most damp advice online is written for cavity-brick housing built after damp proof courses became standard. A 1850s sandstone cottage in Battery Point has no cavity, no course, rubble footings and a wall that behaves like a wick, and advice aimed at a 1990s brick veneer is close to useless for it. Methods that are routine on modern brick — sealing, cement pointing, waterproof coatings — actively damage soft stone.

That is the gap this site is trying to fill. The pages here explain the mechanism, the costs and the heritage process in enough detail that you can judge a quote when you get one, including judging ours.

What we will tell you

That it might be condensation. That the cheapest fix is often a shovel and a day's labour rather than an injected course. That a wall takes months to dry and anyone promising otherwise is managing your expectations rather than your damp. And that if your property is on the Heritage Register there is a process to follow before anybody drills into it.

We have no product to defend, which is the only reason that advice is easy to give.

Suburbs we cover

We cover Hobart and the surrounding suburbs, from the Georgian cottages of Battery Point to the post-war brick of Glenorchy and Moonah.

Someone comes out, meters the walls, looks at the ground levels and tells you what is causing it. You get that in writing before anyone quotes a repair.
